When I arrived at MIT as a freshman, my biggest worry wasn't classes or exams, it was whether I would find my people.
Coming from Atlanta, Georgia, I had a very different idea of what Greek life looked like, and I wasn't sure what joining a sorority at MIT would mean. What I quickly learned, though, is that here, it can mean just about anything. It can mean finding a community of women who challenge you, support you, inspire you, and make a place as immense as MIT feel a little bit smaller.
Going through recruitment ended up being one of the best decisions I've made during my time at MIT. Not only did I meet other women who were navigating the same uncertainties I was, but I also met the people who would become my mentors, closest friends, and sisters.
I still remember walking into the Alpha Phi room on the first day of recruitment. I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and counting down the minutes until I could go home and take a nap. My last party of the day was Aphi, and as I started talking with one of the girls in the room, everything changed. Despite coming from completely different backgrounds, we connected instantly. I walked out of that room feeling something I hadn't felt since arriving at MIT: home. For the first time, I knew exactly where I belonged.
Three years later, that feeling has never left.
Alpha Phi has given me friendships that have shaped my college experience in ways I never could have imagined. It has given me my best friend and roommate. It has given me a little who can always brighten my day, the sister who spent hours helping me prepare for an interview, the sister who brought me flowers on a hard day, and the ones who would drop everything to play a round of cards with me.
It has given me people to celebrate with and people to lean on. The sisters who pulled late nights in the study with me. The sisters who stayed sat at the dinner table talking for hours when we all had work we should have been doing. The ones who are always down for a spontaneous adventure across Boston, who let me raid their closets before formals, who have traveled across the world and back with me, and cheered me on through every success and setback.
And it has given me people who showed up when I needed them most. The sisters who sat beside me, held my hand, and reminded me that I would never have to face difficult moments alone.
Those are the moments that make Alpha Phi feel like home.
As Alpha Phi's Vice President of Recruitment, I am so excited to welcome each of you through our doors, just as I was welcomed three years ago. Recruitment is an opportunity to meet incredible women, hear their stories, and discover where you feel most yourself, and I hope that each one of you can find home in Alpha Phi.
